The province is providing teachers with more technology that will help young students improve reading and writing and older students prepare for good jobs.

Every elementary school will have a mobile technology centre this fall, including notebooks, software and links to online resources.

More than 110 teachers are attending a workshop in Wolfville today, May 3, and Friday, May 4, to learn use the technology in ways that excite students and support their learning.

”Kids and Learning First supports effective teaching in every classroom by providing teachers with tools and resources to bring curriculum alive for every student,” said Kings North MLA Jim Morton on behalf of Education Minister Ramona Jennex.

”These technology centres also support our plan to help more children strengthen their reading and writing skills in early elementary.”

The province is investing $1.4 million in the mobile technology centres.

Other efforts will ensure students continue to benefit from more technology and innovation in classrooms at all grade levels.

A new Technology Education course will be offered next year to Grade 9 students at more than 100 schools.

The new course will engage students and provide powerful hands-on learning experiences in innovative subject areas such as energy engineering, production technology, communications technology and inventions and innovations.

Teachers and students at each participating schools will have access to tools of the trades such as screen process printing kits, power drills and cutting tools and digital cameras. The skills students learn illustrate the province’s commitment to prepare young people for good jobs in Nova Scotia.

Teachers are learning about the new course at a workshop in Truro today and Friday.

Industry and education partners involved in the workshop include: Skills Canada Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Community College, North Nova Education Centre technology education students, Atlantic Photo Supply, Progressive Educational Systems, Fundy Grinding and Machining, Makita Canada, Advance School Supply and Kidder Manufacturing.

(Halifax, NS) NDP MLA for Kings North, Jim Morton, believes the study of relocating the Waterville Municipal Airport is an example of helping create and maintain good jobs in rural Nova Scotia.

”Bringing the province, the municipality and Michelin together to study the options is a well-rounded approach,” said Morton. “I look forward to moving forward and discovering what potential there is for the future of our area.”

”Michelin is a global company, but a key player in Kings County’s economy, and a model for successful business retention in rural Nova Scotia. I am hopeful they will have an even brighter future in our province.”

The province announced today that it will fund the study which is expected to cost up to $100,000.

Liberals, Tories Not In Favour Of Help For Families

by Jim Morton on April 27, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 27, 2012

Jim Morton, MLA

Kings North

(Halifax, NS) Expanded addiction services treatment and upgrades to Aldershot Elementary and Hantsport School are among the initiatives the Liberals and Conservatives voted against today in the House of Assembly.

“That the MLA for Kings West can vote against a budget that adds resources for people battling addictions is disappointing,” said MLA for Kings North Jim Morton.

By voting against the budget, the opposition told Nova Scotians they are not in favour of increases to the Child Tax Benefit, a $5.5 million investment in student assistance, and income tax reductions for 78,000 Nova Scotia families.

“The opposition would obviously prefer to make a political point than support a new Collaborative Emergency Centre in Annapolis Royal,” added Morton. “I see where their priorities lie.”

A Greener Future

February 14, 2012

Advertiser Article February 14 2012 Many people in Kings County are talking about wind energy. It’s an important discussion. While we’ve made progress, 80% of our electricity in Nova Scotia is generated from fossil fuels that harm our environment, leaving us vulnerable to wild price changes in the world market. The price of coal, for [...]

Home Oxygen Providers – Letter to the Editor – Advertiser January 31, 2012

January 31, 2012

To The Editor; I am writing in response to Leo Glavine’s January 19 column that questioned the recent changes to how we select home oxygen providers. I would like to clarify the reasons for the new supplier selection process. Everyone wants Nova Scotians who need home oxygen to receive good service at an appropriate and [...]

December 20, 2011

The House of Assembly began its fall session on Halloween Night. From the media’s account it may look like my colleagues and I spent the whole session talking about labour legislation and pulp mills. While these issues were important, our government’s agenda included a range of bills designed to improve life in Nova Scotia. New [...]
